My sister Cindy,

served a mission in Virginia for the

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

I remember she brought back the post card that told the story of the

"Legend of the Dogwood".

I loved the meaning of the flower and the story.

The Story Of The Dogwood

There is a lovely little legend,
If you look, then you will see,
Hidden within the dogwood-
The blossom and the tree.

Long ago, the dogwood tree
Grew very straight and tall;
The wood was used for crosses,
Since it was the strongest wood of all.

But after Christ was crucified,
The tree grew crooked and curled.
So no more crosses could be made
From the dogwood that was burled.

To commemorate His death,
The tree beared these special flowers,
As symbols of our Savior,
And the love he brings to ours.

Four petals has this posy,
Just as a cross appears,
With a notch at every tip,
As made by Roman spears.

The center of the blossom
Is like the crown of thorns,
That Jesus wore upon his head,
And so the flower it adorns.

This, this simple little shrub
With its flowers of pink or white
Will stand here to remind us
Of Christ, and all His plight.

With Spring here,
and Easter just passed,
this reminds me of new beginnings
and it is never to late to start over,
to make new goals
and to reflect on past experiences
and lessons learned.
